Guy Consolmagno, S.J., director of the Vatican Observatory, one of the oldest astronomical institutes in the world, will be the featured speaker at a virtual event sponsored by the Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering at Loyola Marymount University.

The Seaver Spotlight series, which is co-hosted by LMU Mission and Ministry, runs from 5-6 p.m. on Thursday, March 11. Attendees can register here for Consolmagno’s address, “Your God is Too Small.”

Consolmagno, who is also president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation, the fundraising arm of the observatory that supports its scientific and educational endeavors, will discuss the work being done to address the big questions of astrophysics and cosmology, and what it means to be a creature in an expanding cosmos.

His research explores the connections between meteorites and asteroids, and the origin and evolution of small bodies in the solar system. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in planetary science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. in planetary science from the University of Arizona, and took vows as a Jesuit brother in 1991.

Past Seaver Spotlight speakers include Steve Isakowitz, president and chief executive officer of The Aerospace Corp.; Ellen Pawlikowski, retired four-star general of the U.S. Air Force; Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer of SpaceX; and Paul Viviano, president and chief executive officer of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and chair of LMU’s Board of Trustees.
